Carolyn Hester Coalition - Carolyn Hester Coalition (1968)

"After a handful of Folk albums, The Carolyn Hester Coalition was a completely different beast, taking her in a Psychedelic direction. The album is a fine West Coast-style Hippie fuzz Folk Rock/Pop affair with Hester singing in a decidedly non-folky Acid Bubblegum style. Solid all the way through, this album should appeal to any fan of Neighb'rhood Child'n, Birmingham Sunday, Daisy Chain and similar semi-light trips. " (Amazon review)

Barbara Keith - Barbara Keith (1969)

"Barbara Keith's solo debut is sometimes confused with her 1972 Reprise album in discographies, since both releases were self-titled. This Verve 1969 release, though, is an entirely different record. It's respectable, slightly above-average late-'60s singer/songwriter music, with a strong country-rock flavor (with frequent steel guitar) on many though not all of the tracks. The best part of the LP is Keith's voice, which has a slight shake that is reminiscent of Marianne Faithfull's timbre, though Keith's range is much higher than that of the post-mid-'60s Faithfull." Roberta Gambarini - Easy to Love (2006)

"Although she was born and bred in Italy, Gambarini brings a distinctly American jazz flavor to Easy to Love. On the title track, her multi-octave range can be seen as an indication of the "cool school" but when she starts swinging she’s anything but cool! Her scats and melodies breathe beautifully and her melodic lines have a lighter, airier quality that finds her swinging but in a softer, more relaxed manner. Billie Holiday’s anthem "Lover Man" has been claimed as part of the cool jazz movement and Gambarini certainly offers an outstanding variation of this sublime ballad." (Amazon.com review)

Nina Nastasia - The Blackened Air (2002)

"At first, this sophomore album from New Yorker Nina Nastasia, with her reedy girlish drawl, sounds merely appealing, like nice background music--but that impression lasts for about a minute. The strings (Dylan Willemsa's viola) conjure John Cale, and the shuffling rhythms (Jay Bellerose on drums) defy convention. Besides, there's an edge to Nastasia's voice--creepy and foreboding--that Nick Drake and Nico touched on, and that Chan Marshall and Will Oldham both cultivate in their own ways. Despite that dark urban folk vibe, Nastasia's inner workings seem more lucid, more honest, and well, more optimistic." (Amazon.com review)

Mary-Anne - Me (1970)

"Firmly established as one of the rarest records of its time, and never reissued on vinyl until now, Mary-Anne Paterson’s sole album is a beautiful combination of traditional and original folk material whose echoing production perfectly captures her haunting voice. Scottish folksinger Mary-Anne Paterson made a nice if modest acoustic traditional-oriented album in 1970, Me. It matched her high, clear vocals, acoustic guitars, and flute with sparse echoed production and very occasional touches of acid folk and pop, though overall the LP had a haunting medieval tone." Jonathan and Leigh - Third and Main (1967)

Jonathan And Leigh (born Sandy Roepken, now Sandy Lee Bashaw) were a folk duo that made one album in 1967 before disappearing. The sound is very distinctive, with Jonathan and Leigh's heartfelt Ohio roots shining through in the strong vocals and the accompanying music veering between simple folk stylings and a jangly, electric-folk hybrid.

"Yes, that's not a replication of the American Flag on the top left of this picture....it's a packet containing actual American Flag rolling papers, compliments of High Treason!! This 1970 self-titled LP was recorded in Philadelphia and actually featured several musicians that played with Perry Leopold. Featuring the beautiful and haunting female vocals of Marci Rauer, this music is spacey, bluesy, and psychedelic sounding, much like that of Jefferson Airplane and It's A Beautiful Day!" The Great Society - Conspicuous Only In Its Absence (1968) / How It Was (1971)

The Great Society was a 1960s San Francisco folk-psychedelic rock band. Remembered as the original group of singer Jefferson Airplane's Grace Slick. The band released only one single during its lifetime in 1966, "Somebody to Love" (originally titled "Someone to Love"). Later tapes of live performances were released as two separate albums in 1968 and 1971 after Grace found fame, repackaging both as a double LP called Collector's Item in 1971. Diamanda Galás with John Paul Jones - The Sporting Life (1994)

"Perpetually pissed, Diamanda Galas has screamed her way into cult-goddess status. Arriving in 1982 with "Wild Women With Steak Knives" and serving up in the AIDS requiem Plague Mass a magnum opus, she's a flashy fury with a three and a half octave range and a sensibility spun off from highbrow naughty boys de Sade and Artaud. Ex-Led Zep bassist and eclectic producer and arranger John Paul Jones (Butthole Surfers, R.E.M.) manufactures clangorous backdrops for her operatic murder fantasies and victim chic. What continues to dog Galas is her painful literal mindedness: To chronicle states of psychic torture, she simply tortures the listener." (Rolling Stone magazine review)

Clannad - Dúlamán (1976)

"In 1976 Clannad produced Dúlamán, "which probably was the high point of their albums of solely traditional material. The title track is a song telling the story of two dúlamán or seaweed merchants, one of whom is trying to win the hand of the other's beautiful daughter. The other highlight of the album is the rousing tale of sibling rivalry in "Two Sisters". (Official Review)

News From Babel - Sirens and Silences/Work Resumed on the Tower (1983) / Letters Home (1985)

"News From Babel were a studio project that combined the talents of woodwin player Lindsay Cooper (Henry Cow), American harpist Zeena Parkins, and drummer Chris Cutler as well as vocalist Dagmar Krause (both from Art Bears). Very much in the RIO tradition, both albums are filled with energetic and playful cacophony, unusual chord progressions, odd-time signatures (where drummer Cutler's distinctive style shines), vocal squeals and shrieks, but also unexpected sensuous and fluid passages that take on chamber music-like tones, all nicely complemented by Zeena Parkin’s harp." Mourning Phase - Mourning Phase (1971)

"The Mourning Phase demo-LP was discovered in 1992 and later sold for a 4-figure sum to a 'collector'. It appeared to be a test pressing, dated 1971, with a hand-made cover. Lyrically interesting, the densely layered acoustic/electric music seems merely to serve as a vehicle for the love/hate relationship of, speculatively, the male and female vocalists. Cynical, misanthropic, (with and occasional cello), and a cover based on an impressionist painting. Mourning Phase is surely the archetypal home-made art-student LP"
