Evie Sands - Any Way That You Want Me (1970)

"'Take Me For A Little While I Can't Let Go', 'Angel of The Morning', and 'Any Way That You Want Me' - the original versions of ALL these classics were, believe it or not, by the same artist EVIE SANDS! The young girl whom no less than Dusty Springfield called My favourite singer, who recorded on such classic Rock'N'Roll labels as Blue Cat/Red Bird, Cameo-Parkway and A&M, and who later wrote songs for artists as disparate as Gladys Knight, Dusty Springfield and Barbra Streisand. This is the first CD release of her classic A&M album Any Way That You Want Me, chock full of pop-soul gems with full-on participation from Evie herself...need we say more!"

"This 70's Italian band (vocals in English) employs some unique ideas in their sound, as well as some progressive tendencies, including rapid shifts from soft acoustics to hard rocking electrified guitar jams, etc. Some folk influences are also apparent in the sound, as well as typical late sixties psychedelic folk-rock type harmonies led by lead vocalist Sylviana Aliotta."

Blackthorn - Blackthorn (1977)

"Debut from this obscure Irish electric folk rock band. This album is full of cover versions of major artists and famous traditional numbers such as "Rick Rack" (Gerry Rafferty), "After The Goldrush" (Neil Young), "That's No Way To Say Goodbye" (Leonard Cohen) and "In A Song" (Jim Croce). It indeed is a beautiful album and truly worth exploring the talented folk bands of the mid/late 70s. Nina Szifris, the band's lead singer is truly a gem." (MusicStack.com review)

The Red Masque - Feathers For Flesh (2004)

"The Red Masque is an original avant-rock band from the Philadelphia area. Part art, part alchemy, the group's Progressive rock songwriting style is both angular and eerie, accented by freeform space-rock improvisations, intricate acoustics and chunky riffs. "Feathers For Flesh" (2004) is an avant rock masterpiece and is the band's most sophisticated and sinister album to date. With monster bass lines, thunderous and intricate drum work, slinky and psychedelic guitar craft, unique vocals, creep organ keyboards, mutated Mellotrons, and a masterful arsenal of unexpected aural sound effects utilizing non-traditional rock instrumentation (Everything from the Chinese erhu to the bowed psaltery, pots and pans, and a slinky toy)." Pamela Wyn Shannon - Courting Autumn (2007)

"Massachusetts-based musician, Pamela Wyn Shannon's inventive and intricate guitar work has been described as "a tiny chamber orchestra working in unison at the end of her hands." She has walked with the legends of British and Irish folk music, garnering respect and admiration wherever she goes. The songs on her new CD, Courting Autumn, have an elliptical quality which creates its own timeframe, rules, and kingdoms, reminiscent of that magic found in UK '60s psyche-folk artifact. She recorded largely on her own throughout New England, is a rustic almanac of autumnal songs burnished with a melancholy mood, wistful vocals, delicate hand-spun guitar playing, weather-worn and windswept by plaintive string and recorder arrangements." Nostradamos - Nostradamos (1972)

"Only record from short-lived Greek folk/rock band, first released on Zodiac in 1972. As the booklet text says, 'they made one record, being a quiet record, where the beautiful woman's voice of Despina Glezou makes a transparent impression, in songs which integrate Greek song styles into the elements of American rock and pop music. There are delicate parts, there are groovy parts -- but throughout the album there is a wonderful and a standardized impression. The melodies overflow. The wind that blows is an agreeable one. Other than guitar, bass and drums, there is violin and Hammond, the flute and something that sounds like French horn. It seems like pathos, it seems like folk rock, it seems that what we can all like is in all the band's pop songs. Whatever you like, maybe you don't stop wanting to hear this strange record. You can hear it now with sufficiently good sound, with the delicate nuance in evidence. It is transmitted." (unknown reviewer)

Queen of the Ocean is a fireworks display of symphonic progressive art rock and metal, combining diversified arrangements with crystal clear hook lines and melodic vocals which leave an indelible impression. Ie Rai Shan - Ie Rai Shan (1994)

"Ie Rai Shan performs elaborate progressive rock, solidly based on multiple keyboard layers (Mellotron, organ, synthesizers...) and female vocals. Their music is highly sophisticated and refined, with lyrical flights and solemn crescendos. It comes close to Pageant (not surprisingly, as guitarist Ikkou Nakajima was once a member of that band), Mugen (which featured keyboardist Katsuhiko Hayashi), Magdalena (drummer Shinjirou Inoue...), Pale Acute Moon (bassist Katsunari Hamada...) and other Japanese symphonic progressive bands. Hendrickson Road House - Hendrickson Road House (1970)

"Mega-rare light psych item is one of the few in the genre in which the creative force is a woman, Sue Akins. This isn't really much like all of the Airplane-wannabe bands, either; Hendrickson Road House has a distinctive sound with mildly jazzy arrangements, subtle lead guitar, a tad of autoharp, smooth vocals and a definite late-night feel. The guitar playing has a bit of a West Coast influence, though it's not the least bit heavy. The closest comparison would be the Serpent Power songs with Tina Meltzer on lead vocals. One jazzy instrumental with a lot of sax manages not to sound out of place. Otherwise Akins sings all of the songs, and the album has a coherence not often felt in the genre. Not a masterpiece, but quite good, and the lack of a reissue is truly puzzling given its quality and rarity." (The Acid Archives of Underground Sounds review)

Limited vinyl edition with different cover

This album was recorded in 1969, but it was released only in 1998. It contains the original versions of material that would be re-recorded and released as the band's debut album Sacrifice (1970). The group is usually compared to Black Sabbath mostly because of early use of satanic and occult imagery, but musically they sound more like late 60s Hard Rock with strong progressive influences and male/female vocals (playing sax, flutes, organ, percussion and others). Amarok - Mujer Luna (2002)

Don't confuse with a Polish Prog Rock group.
"Amarok's style is quite different from the current Spanish Progressive rock movement, thanks to their tone. Led by multi-instrumentalist Robert Santamaria, this mainly acoustic band uses a variety of instruments, like the guitar, oboe, violin, piano, didgeridoo, tabla, saxophone, organ, drums and percussions. Mireia Sisquella's clear voice creates sound-scapes characterised by their simplicity and calm, and this makes her the counterpart of Portuguese singer Teresa Salgueiro (Madredeus). Some keyboards rhythm sequences are the basis for the superb melodies pictured by the vocals, in a peaceful atmosphere between Enya's acoustic new-age, L'Ensemble Raye's minimalist chamber rock and In The Labyrinth's ethnic musics (Apart from the Indian references)." Victoria - Victoria (1971)

Local New Jersey demo-release (200 made in 1971) from Victoria, a band and album beyond rare, fantastic, conceptual psych-beauty. Sometimes dreamy, sometimes totally wild underground-psych, this release features female vocals, titanic horns and distorted guitars. Sweet tunes turn into dark psych-power. Totally stoned. This amazing album was first released on the Seven Little Indians label (before it became Shadoks Music) eight or nine years ago as a limited-edition with a red velvet cover and golden engraved artwork. A 500-copy limited-edition CD, also in red velvet, was sold out in a few months. Besides Jungle, this album is a famous Little Indian release. If you like Moby Grape you should check this one out. Nancy Sinatra - Boots (1966)

Nancy's career wasn't going well until her association with veteran producer Lee Hazlewood. He toughened her vocal manner, added a slab of rockabilly echo, jangly acoustic guitar, and some punchy arrangemnets to her music. Their second single "These Boots Are Made For Walkin'" became an international #1 hit and recast public image from bubblegum pop singer to a provocative and her rebel style go-go dancer.

The promo-video "These Boots Are Made for Walkin'" was a sensation in that time with big-haired Nancy and six shapely young women in tight tops, go-go boots and mini-skirts. Nowadays it seems so silly...

"Wreckers" brings about a very English electric folk style high on drama and atmospherics perfectly suiting big ballads like "Yarrow" and "Cold Blows The Wind". Legend - Second Sight (1993)

"Legend tends toward longer than radio-length songs (up to thirteen minutes), and complex arrangements, including intricate meter changes, all of which they manage with nary a sweat broken. They must be amazing to see live. Steve Paine’s keyboards flow smoothly between background chords and melodic lead lines, while Paul Thomson lays down well-placed riffs and singing solos over a tight rhythm section. The least rock-like thing about this band is their vocalist. Debbie Chapman has clearly had some sort of formal voice training - she sounds more like an opera singer than your average rock banshee."
